"Holy is the lamb. You are Holy" Played quietly from the living area as we entered into a small bedroom. My first home based care visit.
Awaiting inside lay a 15 year old, "Precious" is her name. She lays naked on a single bed below an open window in the corner of the room. It's evident she is in pain, painfully thin, feverish, scars on her body, coughing with tears in her eyes as she grasps her chest, too weak to even prop herself up.The small concrete room, brown walls and tin roof set a scene that feels strangely familiar. I sit on the floor next to Precious' bed. In the other corner sits chair and next to it a wicker mat as a bed. It was Masoyi HBC's first time to visit her. Sister ( meaning Nurse in SA) Emily sits on the edge of the bed to begin her assesment of Precious, finding out what brought us to her home. Her temperature is high, next to me is a can in case she brings up again, also having diareeah for days, her lymph nodes are swollen under her thin arms and when shining a light in her mouth the thrush is obvious. Precious whispers for her grandmother and others to leave the room to share openly with Emily. I shut the door behind them. Taped on the back of the door is a white piece of paper, with a womans face drawn on it. On the top right corner reading upwards is "Before Marriage" and the bottom left corner reading upside down " After Marriage". It dawn quickly upon me why we were here... Emily and precious speak quietly in Zulu where Precious shares that she had a boyfriend who later, she found out, had a wife, or many. Emily leaves her number in case her fever doesnt subside so that we can bring her to the hospital and convinces her to come to the clinic on Friday to see a Doctor. The signs are all evident to me....Before leaving we prayed over her young body. I took a bracelet from my arm and slide it on her small wrist, although she was still laying there weak and naked, her eyes spoke many words, so unexpectant and greatful. I told her that it read "Princess" and thats exactly what she is and I never want her to forget. She began to cry as she lifted her fragile arm to her lips kissing the green rubber band over and over. I told her that she is the precious daughter of the most high King of Kings, making her a Princess, royalty. I reminded her to find her joy and strength in her Lord Father. As she wept I held and kissed her before we headed to the next home.
I'll never in my life forget her...15 years young and dealing with the denial of being HIV+...Where were you when you were 15? I asked myself as I sat holding her hand.
