Topic: save the sharks
shark fining has to stop

Hi Tania,

Extracting the fins of sharks then dumping the helpless creatures back into the ocean causes them an agonizing death. I read that 600.000 to 700.000 sharks are killed every year off the coast of Ecuador in the Galapagos Islands region just because of their fins.

As long as there is a demand, there will always be someone to supply the demand. Simply put, costumers have the power to stop it.

I see your point.. shark-fin soup is considered a delicasy in some places.
The large increase in demand is the primary factor for the decline of many shark species.

Another thing that crosses my mind is that.. what makes it more dificult for any campaign to save them is that they have a bad reputation.

If people would get more knowledge about this and be able to understands the torture and pain this causes to the sharks, shark-fin soup might not be thought of as a delicacy.

I agree 100%. I hate how people think just because the ocean is so vast - that it's impossible to cause any permanent destruction. Especially when it involves overfishing. The shark finning industry is absolutley preposterous. It needs to stop or we are going to lose one of the most precious animals in the ocean that has been thriving on earth for over 200,000 million years until we humans began to invade it's home.

I recently watched this movie called Shark Water, and it puts everything about the shark finning industry into film. It is a must watch for people who care about these sharks.

There are over 400 species of sharks and only four types are likely to attack humans.
They attack humans when they are confused or when they feel threatened. These species are: the Great White shark, the Tiger shark, the Bull shark and the Hammerhead.
But, of course, I wouldn't suggest anyone to come close to any of them without professional supervision.

I thought the Hammerhead sharks are one of the more shyer species of sharks. I've never heard of a Hammerhead attacking anyone. - At least not reported.
