that`s the symbol of life. usually only pharoahs (and various gods) could hold this amulet in their hands: it reflected the king`s power to give and take away the life.

Hi Kat, The Anhk represents life, as Egyptica Sands said. I would like to add a question to your main subject, does anybody knows why an Anhk would have a black circle in the back, at the center and this black circle is inside a square shape with the vertix up?....and what does that mean? I ask because when I was around 8 years old I found an Anhk in the street and it had this shape in the back....

hmm..nice discovery patricia:) well, but it`s a modern ankh, i mean..perhaps those figures on the back of the amulet had some sort of special meaning to the owner. i`m not sure if ancient egyptians were doing the same thing on their ankhs:)

Hello! The Ankh symbolizes also the immortal life, when used by goods.…you can find it in various tomb’s and temples paintings representing the goods offering the breath of eternal life to the pharaohs with an ankn near the mouth …like Nefertiti receiving the ankh from Isis; Amenhotep II from Anúbis…and so on. It is an icon directly related with the death and resurrection of Osiris…related with the natural gift of immortality in case of the pharaoh, or the idea of being worthy to conquer immortal life. It is also used to represent the sacred water related to the Nile as the great source of life in Egypt.
