Topic: How do you measure petrol, diesel etc?
How do you mesure petrolium , by mass or volume?
If so how much amount is there in a barrel?

the wikipedia says
Oil barrel =42 US gallons =158.9873 litres
So the mesurement is from Volume
But doesn't the volume of a liquid expand according to the temperature?
If so shouldn't it be measured by mass rather than Volume?
If not so please explain

Actually, what unit should use in measuring petrol is not simple step rather it goes into multi-tests and then it is decided.regarding expansion of volume,it may be possible that increase in volume is not much problem then carrying a heavier things with your vehicles coz mass is always greater than volume in the sense of comparison. i guess!!!!!!!!!!!

there was a physics problem conserning petrol in one of my tutes
A petrol shed buys petrol in the morning and cells 10 000 ltrs in the morning and 300ltrs in the evening
The temperature during the time the shed collect petrol and during the time it sells differs
The question asked was how much the owner of the shen earn without knowing due to the expansion of petrol

Well now petrol is not mixed vith many things other than Octane

And the problem I have is do we get less petrol when the temperature is high than we pay for?

Petrol is made ideal solution to some extent by adding suitable solution and ideal solution doesn't vary with varying temperature.I think thats the most probable answer to your question.

This is good question for kids !
The volume change of 300 lit of petrol will not be visible. So there is no chance of the owner earning more!
Secondly the temp. of petrol is not allowed to rise more other wise it will evaporate from the tanks.
Thirdly the tanks that store the petrol are kept under ground where the temp does not rise significantly.

Are you sure ? if not then plz dont be so confident coz others respects your views here in the group Mr Mahesh.Owner can ern more in total coz 'little makes more!' and secondly he is talking after taking from petroleum bed(mean in the bike's tank)!!!!!!!!!!

There may be small variation but this can give huge profit and loss who is selling in total!

Yes, then only i like to give details. I have been working with serveyors so i know to the point!
No solution is added to petrol to make it evoperation proof! There was time when TEL was added to reduce the knoking, but now adays it is not at all added. Reason being environment pollution( TEL = tri ethyl lead) !
